Massey Harbison
Written and Directed by Rennick Steele.
Offered in celebration of America 250: Spirit of Pennsylvania,
The heroic story of Massey Harbison, “frontier” heroine and daughter of the American Revolution, begins in 1786, before the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to draft the Constitution of the United States. Young Massey was born in 1770, in Amwell, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Edward White, a soldier during the Revolutionary War, and Rebecca Pelton, a descendant of a Mayflower passenger, Richard More. Massey attends the Redstone Turkey Shoot in 1786, three years before George Washington took the presidential oath of office, where she meets the irresistible Scots-Irish lad, John Harbison.
In the year 1789, my husband and I removed to the Allegheny river, near Reed’s station; about four miles and a half below where Freeport now stands. In the year 1791, in March, my husband enlisted under Captain John Guthrie, and marched out under the command of General St. Clair, in Major Clark’s battalion, to the Miami.
And what happens next is dramatized in FTFs production being offered as a celebration of America 250: the Spirit of Pennsylvania.
